Busoga Shining Light Association
As children, Nathan Magumba and John Kabanda lost both of their parents. But as in many African communities Nathan and John found the support they needed to get an education through neighbors, friends and family. After completing their education they decided it was time to give back to the community that supported them through school.
In 2002, Nathan and John formed what is today the Busoga Shining Light
Association. With the support of local youth and the wisdom of community elders, they began an HIV/AIDS education drama group, traveling to different villages to perform, discuss, and educate. With the success of this program, they were able to begin addressing issues of poverty and food security through agriculture and nutrition training programs. Soon, they had educated over 360 individuals in 12 villages throughout Iganga District.
Our relationship with BSLA began in 2006 when a friend and passionate volunteer for Slum Doctor Programme brought a new project proposal from BSLA to the table. Paul Barkley has spent the last 20 years of his life working on agriculture and food security programs in Uganda. We were all ears when he suggested a new partnership with BSLA.
Finally in 2007, in partnership with Bellingham investment firm Saturna Capital, Slum Doctor Programme provided support to initiate a sustainable agriculture and income generating program for 25 AIDS widows in several villages in Iganga District.
This project is:
- providing farmers (AIDS widows) with accounting and small business management skills
- providing farmers with small grants to purchase seeds, fertilizer and a maize drying crib to preserve their crops
- educating women and communities about HIV/AIDS
- generating a sustainable income for women, many of whom are taking care of 5+ children, their own and others orphaned in their community
